The speedometer – connected to the propellor shaft by a flexible cable – tells your cars speed by a little lightning arithmetic. Basically it counts drive shaft revolutions and then relates them to the size of the wheels. In one type the indicating pointer is coupled to the rotating shaft through a centrifigual govenor. IN the usual type, however coupling is achieved entirely by a trick of magnetism.
Not many years ago it seems an automobile driver would test his gas supply with a stick. This was a stick with the early Volkswagen VW beetles. In some cases the driver would find out when his gas tank was empty when his car stopped – that was unless he had an auxilliary “reserve” smaller tank. Next he would figure otu when his cooling system was not working when his radiator steamed. Oil circulation must be bad when bearing wore out or pistons froze in cylinder.
Today thanks to ingenious electrical and mecahnical devices – all these important variables of car operation are clearly registered on dashboard dials.
