Raising a car high enough to work on it, or under it safely can cause a problem for home mechanics. The bumper jacks and side-lift jacks that come with the majority of cars are flimsy and should never be used for anything but changing a tire. A “scissors’ jack is safer and easier to use. Post hydraulic types of hydraulic jacks may not fit under your car. or if they do fit , may not raise your car high enough under the jack stands to put in place. A small version of a mechanic’s jack is expensive, but is a good investment if you use it often.
Before jacking up a car , park on high ground. Set the parking brake, and put the transmission in gear. (Automatic in Park , manuals in Reverse). When raising both front or rear wheels, center the jack under a solid jacking point, such as the differential housing or the lower suspension A-arms. Raise the car enough to fit the jack stands under the frame. then lower the car onto them. For a light car , you will need a 1.5 tonne jack stands , for heavy vehicles such as a van , 2.5 -tonne jack stands.
If the wheels need not hang free, you can raise the car by driving it up onto ramps. For safety , buy ramps that will support 2.5 to 4 tonnes. Ramps must be at least 30 cm ( 12 inches) wide to accomodate most tires and they must raise the car at least 45 cm ( 18 inches) off the ground to allow enough work space. Position the ramps directly in line with wheels that are to be raised. With someone to guide you. drive slowly onto the ramps. being careful not to overdrive them or let the wheels slide off the sides. When the car is properly positioned , set the parking brake and put the transmission in gear ( automatics in Park). When using either ramps or jack stands, use blocks of wood to chock the wheels that remain on the ground.
Caution : Never get under a car that is supported only by a jack. Always use ramps or jack stands. This can not be stressed enough or emphasized enough. Always play it safe. Safety always pays.
