Early on in the history of automotive design carriage builders in the 19′th century used a highly evolved version of what might be called “the basic method” and methods and then at some point in time and automotive industry growth patterns shifted to the manufacture and design of car bodies.
Before the advent of the all steel metal car body manufacturers made extensive use of the material wood. This could be seen as a simple cross over of preferences or indeed a carryover from the carriage trade . Interestingly just as newspapers have carved out huge holdings of forests and paper mills and processes these carriage makers owned large swatches of timberland. Car bodies were not always built of wood or steel either. Through the years body makers tried a spreadable plaster, made from sawdust and glue , papier-mache, plywood , leather and various types of leather like substances.
Although the earliest corporate styling departments were set up before the era of World War 1 at smaller companies like Locomobile and Studebaker. General Motors did not establish its Art and Color Section until 1927. Similarly Ford did not hire its first in house designer until 1931.
Before then, the independent coachmakers maintained their own stylists and did much if not all of the design work ofr clients. Fords 1928 Model A , for example was designed part by Amos Northrup, chief stylist at the Murray Corporation of America , which built bodies for the Ford Motor Company and others.
