Each return loop or circuit has a switch that acts like a drawbridge. When the drawbridge is lowered, the circuit is fully complete, and the current can thus move and flow : when the drawbridge is up, the circuit is incomplete and thus the electrical current in that circuit cannot flow.
For example when you turn on the headlights or headlamps of your vehicle for nighttime driving, a switch lowers the drawbridge for that light’s circuit. The circuit is complete and thus current flows to the headlights. The current circle has been completed and your headlights shine brightly from your vehicle in the nighttime drive.
Relays are backup safety switches that are used on circuits with particularly strong electrical current; for example the ignition , your truck’s windshield wiper motor or the horn.
Just as any metal or plastic device can malfunction, so can automotive electrical switches and relays – especially when you add the unpredictability of driving conditions and bumps , jumps on the road and climate when driving outside. A relay can simply stop working, and current will not flow to that accessory in its charge. A switch can become “stuck” in the on position completing the current so that the current flows constantly going to the light or accessory- even when the driver assumes that it is not. Even if the accessory or light does not use a terribly large amount of current , it is the like the drip , drip , drip , constant dripping of Chinese water torture. Soon the reserve capacity of the battery will be used up. The motorist will have a dead battery on his hands that will be unable to turn over the starter motor and start his car. Luckily in this day and age we have portable cell phones to which call the Manitoba Motor League or a convenient tow truck for a boost.
