Some time ago an unpublished report of repute came out to the conclusion that ethanol blended auto emissions are no “greener” in any manner or means than standard blends of gasoline. This is in direct opposite to the view to the view of ecologists that “green ethanol ” is “better”.
This is in addition to the problems created by the use of corn or wheat based originated ethanol . Using these foodstuffs as such is a direct net waste of energy. Energy and resources are used to both in the growth on the farm , and in the production and distillation of the ethanol based fuels.
North American ethanol does not make sense in any manner – be it in Canada or the US. Ethanol from warmer climates does. Whether it is ethanol from Brazil derived from sugarcane sources , or in the Caribbean – that makes good sense. These crops are grown with little use of petroleum based fertilizers and pesticides. On top of that same ethanol can be used in the production and distillation process as opposed to petroleum based electrical and coal generated energy sources.
Many Canadians believe foolishly that by filling up with ethanol blended gasoline fuel products that they are reducing the emission of greenhouse gases that damage our environment.
In Manitoba Canada the provincial NDP government has institutionalized the process by formulating laws that make gasohol a mandatory rather than an option. Only by purchasing more expensive number “1″ high test octane gas can the auto owner evade this mandate. So much for Manitoba’s premier Gary Doerr.
