Is it all one giant trap. Poor management and unbelievable out of this world union demands “They have to buy our cars…… nobody wants a foreign jobbiee … the company has all the money in the world…. the big bosses… etc etc etc.” leads to ultimately smaller volumes of sales.

Then these reduced overall sales lead to push automakers to reduce even slash output. Reduce costs, close factories and reduce whole model lines never mind the reduction of “product development”.

Product development at the big 3 was usually how to rebadge the same product and figure out how to market /confuse in reality fool the consumer ( as if they were morons) that they should pay big dollars more for the identical product with a different name. And yet often US and Canadian consumers were fooled ( or perhaps it was self rationalization that they had not been ripped off) , that a Mercury Cougar was a Cougar and not a “Ford Thunderbird”.

Amazingly even the few innovative areas – such as the General Motors Oldsmobile “Olds” Division was shut down in the name of standard rationalization and cost reduction /control. Olds it seems was an anomaly , a mislaid sister that fit not to well as a division of Pontiac – all not too neatly. Yet this odd group produced the only innovative and totally new and all to together unique products that were coming out of GM. Perhaps because it did not fit into the mix ( or vanilla controlled areas of management ) that it was shut down and closed as an auto badge and division of GM.

In the end no matter what the top US auto execs say and the union bosses insist that when you see a Ukrainian Bubba driving a Toyota Corolla down Salter Ave in the north end of Winnipeg , just as she would of driven her late husband’s hand me down Chevy or Pontiac you know that no matter what the domestic car industry auto execs and mouthpieces are telling you that sales volume and market share of the American domestic auto industry is down. As a prominent auto analyst noted “I learned a long time ago how to tell when these bastards were lying …. when their lips were moving”
