Ford "Rouge" Plant

Its an historic area of Detroit – full of automotive history and lore referred to as “the Rouge”  or specifically “Ford Rouge” .  You can even tour the Ford Rouge auto plant.  It is a huge piece of real estate so to speak, that is not particularly notable for much anything else or even in an upscale part of Dearborn Michigan.

Accurately the name in full is the River Rouge Plant Complex, and when the Ford Motor Company fully completed the factory plant in 1928, at the merger or coming together of the Rogue ( the color red in the French language), and the Detroit Rivers, it became fully the largest integrated factory in the whole world.

Even before auto production started there in 1927, the Rogue famous coke ovens ,  and foundry produced nearly all the parts for the Ford Model “T”.   In addition to the iron ore processing facilities and assembly component areas of the Ford factory complex, there were even docks alongside the dredged Rogue river,  a full 160 km of interior railroad track and tracks and even full electricity electrical power plants onsite.

The Ford Rogue plant could be said to be the innovative pioneering unit of its time , of fully contained and integrated factory plants and town, completely self  reliant , independent and fully functionally integrated.

During its peak of production in the 1940′s and the 1050′s about 100,000 Ford workers were employed on-site.
