We Shall See Ford as a Successful Emulator of Toyota's Methods

An interesting case in point.  According to a recent report in the New York Times Ford’s chief executive credits highly Ford’s recent most strong corporate health and profit statement to Toyota, his admiration of and emulation of Toyota’s production methods themselves.

For roughly two decades, Alan R. Mulally, Ford Motor’s chief executive, has been an unabashed fan of the Toyota Motor Company.  Earlier in his career at the Boeing Aircraft industry – Mr. Mulally referred to Toyota as ”

“The finest production system in the world,” Mr. Mulally called Toyota during a dinner with journalists in December 2006.

This week, at least, the student is doing better than the teacher.”

Yet Toyota’s current problems – at least in the short term relate to manufacturing errors leading directly to safety issues in the press.   Perhaps these issues were misunderstood in their total impact – much like intel deciding that CPU rounding off minuscule rounding off calculations were also insignificant.

As they say “We shall see”

Then again perhaps the Ford Motor Company learned the same safety lessons with the exploding burning Ford Pintos and the Explorer rollovers earlier in its career.
