Hydraulic fluids have quite a task at hand. Hydraulic fluids have to transmit pressures . Thus they can only accomplish their tasks to fruition as long as they are pure fluid only – not contaminated with air and atmospheric gasses. You can bet that once their is air in the hydraulic braking system pressing your brake pedal , especially in emergency stop conditions does not transfer pressure through the fluid. Imagine you are on the Trans-Canada # 1 highway with a full buck Moose staring directly into your eyes. Just a bit of air in your hydraulic brake fluid can make the whole difference between major collision of your vehicle with that animal on the highway or a good emergency stop with your brakes in good working order.
If the brake pedal travels to the floor, or nearly to the floor it could be caused by one of two faults - either wear of the friction material or air in the hydraulic system. In previous years more hardy asbestos was used as braking friction material. Asbestos it seems however is not a good idea for health. The same abilities which gave its usefulness as a friction material – long lasting no matter what turned out to be its downfall when it was discovered after many years and exposure that asbestos is a potent cancer causing agent a carcinogen, which due to asbestos’s hardiness stuck around in people’s bodies. Whether enough of the asbestos dust was inhaled from brake exhausts , and asbestos great ability as a brake friction material come into question and now non toxic asbestos substitutes are used in auto repair trade. Some experienced mechanics lament this fact and would argue that asbestos is a far superior braking material for automotive use than the substitutes and braking safety should be an element of the equation .
Which however is causing you as an auto owner reduced breaking ability of your vehicle ? The quick and dirty test of how to decide which is causing you the trouble is to pump the brake pedal several times to decrease the amount of travel , then press the brake pedal very firmly and solidly.
Watch the reaction. If the pedal feels good and solid, the cause of the excess travel is wear on the linings plain and simple clear as mud.
