A simple increase or decrease in 8 degrees f. in temperature can change tire pressure one pound . Hence if you check your car’s tire pressure when the temperature is 70 and then drive out in subzero weather , that you will find that as the tire cools it may be seriously under-inflated – risking damage to the sidewalls of the tires.

Hence even though it is less convenient , it is always best to check tire pressure outside in the cold weather. For full accurate results , it is best to let the car sit outside for a while.
