Capital One Financial Corp. (COF) reported U.S. credit-card delinquencies fell again during July while domestic net charge-offs declined for a fourth-straight month as the sector continues to recover from losses on souring loans and late payments from borrowers.
A number of banks continued to report improved performance at their credit-card businesses in the latest quarter. The three major credit card companies saw increased consumer spending and processed more payments, adding to evidence supporting hopes for an industry turnaround.
Delinquencies and charge-offs–loans banks don’t think they will be able to collect–are a gauge of potential losses and the amount lenders may need to set aside to cover them.
Card-issuer-turned-bank Capital One said charge-offs dropped to 8.13% last month from 9.28% in June at its U.S. card business and were down at 7.86% from 8.29% internationally, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Auto-finance charge-offs fell to 2.6% from 2.72%.
At Capital One’s U.S. credit-card business, 30-day delinquencies declined to 4.66% from 4.79% in June and fell to 5.94% from 6.03% internationally. The auto-loan rate dropped to 7.72% from 7.74%.
Capital One last month reported that it swung to a second-quarter profit as revenue jumped and loan-loss provisions dropped sharply and credit-card metrics improved sequentially.
