Grind the area around the damaged fiberglass auto body area at a distance of four inches. In your repair process you will be adding quite a lot of new fiberglass mat. Do not be afraid of putting in some good grinder marks.
The area about 3 inches outside the damage should be ground away on an even tape to the edge of the hole or crack. The taper should graduate from very thin at the crack to full thickness at the edge of grinding. The fiberglass dust from grinding usually irritates most people , so cover up as much as possible when grinding and wash with cold water immediately afterwards. If you use hot water, it will open up the pores of your skin and will cause you to itch for days.
