The area about 3 inches outside the damage should be ground away on an even tape to the edge of the hole or crack. The taper should graduate from very thin at the crack to full thickness at the edge of grinding. The fiberglass dust from grinding usually irritates most people , so cover up as much as possible when grinding and wash with cold water immediately afterwards. If you use hot water, it will open up the pores of your skin and will cause you to itch for days.
