What a difference a year makes – both in terms of an auto model’s year and the calendar year.
A year ago G.M. General Motors was on its deathbed and the “imports “ were taking over. Lower health care costs ( younger workers with few health care costs and demands), non union labor. The imports – Toyota , Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi ,KIA , Hyundai and the like were on the roll. GM with all its costs – all brands ridden for fat profits and profit margins over the years seemed done for and even done in. On top of that with government urging Gm sold its crown Jewel – GMAC financing.
It might be said that GM ( and other car makers and big box stores) were not in the sales or production / manufacturing business they were in the finance business.
yet Mr. Obama and his minions accomplished more than one action in one fell swoopp. Not only did the mighty G.M. become “Government Motors” but with the divestiture of GMAC financing for auto as well as truck buyers became less integrated and easy. Bankers are less forgiving and have little vested interest in handing over financing for that vehicle.
It stops to be a one hand washes the other in terms of auto sales / auto financing. Less cars on the road may well make the green crowd rub their hands with glee- all the while flying in corporate or NGO private jets overseas. Yet the apparent contradictions in left wing thinking in regards to the auto industry seldom come into play.
In the auto industry after all its a matter of numbers , stats and profits. Shave a penny off costs of a unit and its a million dollars , or in today’s 2010 / 2011 terms a billion or in Mr. Obama’s / Soros’s terms a trillion.
Now the numbers have come into play with Toyota. One tenth of a thousandth of a percent of circuit board failures in the cold extreme weather conditions of northern Alberta or Edmonton / Sherwood park Alberta – work out to 3 failures. Yet people see horror stories ( unrelated and coincidental ) with some babbling grandmother on CNN out to make a settlement with Toyota and somehow a simple stalling issue becomes a run away car story . People who mean well after all , but are totally misinformed desperately phone to warn their friends of the dangers of driving their Toyota Corolla / Matrix. Guess one should stay at home and never go out. And certainly not buy another Toyota.
