Priming is where one’s patience comes in, You start by following the directions on the can of primer … or if in doubt with two parts paint thinner ( a brand name medium grade available at Canadian Tire or better autobody shop supply outlets). Medium grade paint thinners can take longer to dry but adhere better. Mix to one part DuPont 80. If you mix it too thick the surface will become porous and will eventually lead to a rough paint surface. If you mix it too thin, it could lift the plastic filler , or not deposit enough material or waste the thinning agent or thinning agents. It can be recommended to apply primer in the early morning , when dust is often down , with a No. 18 Banks gun under 20 to 22 pounds of line pressure. Two thin coats ( which is approximately two quarts) per vehicle body, followed a half hour later with a “fogged-on” guide coat can be best followed by three days of air drying to allow for shrinkage , surface flaws or lifting to appear. This can be the result of poor previous metal work or contaminants left or missed on the surface layer of the primer paint.
The importance of sanding the vehicle body well cannot be overstressed or overemphasized. Always start with a fresh piece of sandpaper ( 3M 350. 400 or 600) and plenty of clean water. Always use a sanding block ( a hunk of balsa wood or rubber blocks). Never spend too much time in one spot, sand in one direction and look for low spots ( the guide coat will show these). Sand with the flow of the metal and sand with a certain amount of fee- one panel at a time.) What you are doing when you sand is eliminating low spots. Sand and prime, sand and prime until any low spots are gone. Once this happens, hit the overall surface with another thin coat , making sure that it goes on very smoothly and even. Let this coat sit for a day, scuff it with No. 400 dry sandpaper, wash it thoroughly , then allow it to dry for 24 hours – that is a one day time period.
