Auto styles have changed as much as women’s hats – but for entirely different reasons. The hats have merely followed fashion and fashion changes. Car and Auto designs were changed to follow natural laws.
Centuries ago Archimedes observed that the stability of an object always increases as you lower its center of gravity – the point at which all points of the object exactly balance each other.
Automobile designers have made use of this and these design points in transforming vehicle bodies – whether it be auto , car , SUV , van or truck bodies from the high boxlike affairs of many years ago to the lower , more streamlined automotive products of today. As Archimedes could have predicted, lowering the center of gravity makes the cars less likely to tip over.
Automotive designers have also taken into consideration , the air’s resistance to the motion of the car. It increases in proportion to the cube of the speed. This does not matter much at 30 or 40 km ( 50 to 70 km) , but it becomes very important at speeds of 70 – 80 miles per hour ( 110 – 130 kilometeres per hour). At the higher speeds vintage square automotive body products might need 60 horsepower (hp) just to buck the trend. Modern streamlining cuts the power requirements considerably.
Strangely enough , the car makes have found that it is more important to streamline the rear of the car rather than the front. Turbulent air behind creates a partial vacuum that tends to slow the car.
